Colpo del Tolone: Munster fuori dall’Heineken Cup!

Two-time European Cup champions Munster were dumped out of the competition on Sunday as they succumbed 32-16 to Toulon.
It’s the first time in thirteen seasons that Munster have failed to make it to the quarter-finals but few will deny that they were outplayed by their ‘French’ hosts at Stade Felix Mayol.
In front of their boisterous partisan crowd, Toulon outscored their visitors two tries to one while Jonny Wilkinson contributed 22 points with his boot.
The result, with London Irish’s victory over Ospreys, means that Toulon have qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time in their history with one round still to play.
It was dismal day for Munster who failed to match the intensity of the Toulon’s multi-national armada – especially the home side’s back row.
It started well-enough for the Irish Province, who were on the scoreboard inside three minutes as Ronan O’Gara opened his account from the kicking-tee.
However, by the end of the first quarter Wilkinson had replied, with interest, bouncing his second penalty off the upright and sending his third straight down the middle to give RCT a 9-3 lead.
Toulon’s first try wasn’t long in coming as scrum-half Pierre Mignoni sent a pin-point accurate kick into the corner and wing Christian Loamanu used his bulk to rise highest and muscle through three defenders to score.
Munster were struggling and were put into further trouble when lock Donncha O’Callaghan was sent to the sin bin for a silly high tackle.
The hosts made their extra man count as Mignoni stepped his way into space. Joe van Niekerk almost ruined a golden opportunity with a sloppy pass but Paul Sackey did brilliantly to shrug off Keith Earls and score.
O’Gara slotted a penalty for the visitors on the stroke of half time but at 26-9 down, it wasn’t looking good for the red army.
The 20-point lead was restored almost immediately after the restart, although the video referee was needed to confirm that Wilkinson’s kick was good.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when some handbag swinging between Mignoni and O’Gara degenerated into a wider conflict. The match officials – somewhat harshly – decided to pin the blame on the Munster fly-half, who was shown a yellow card.
O’Gara returned just in time to see Wilkinson add three more points.
The television official has a busy night as he denied Munster wing Doug Howlett and Toulon replacement prop Saimone Taumoepeau tries – both players just grazing the touchline in the act of going over.
Munster added the last points of the evening when David Wallace barged his way over in the dying minutes but the horse had already bolted.
All credit to Toulon, who deserved victory and their historic qualification into the play-offs.
Man of the match: A mention must go to the Toulon loose trio of Joe van Niekerk, George Smith and Juan Fernandez Lobbe but we’ll go for veteran scrum-half Pierre Mignoni, who is playing his last season but still had the class to create both tries for les Rouge et Noires.

Challenge Cup: Rovigo-Gloucester 7-55
Salvato l’onore, anche se in parte. La “paga” è inferiore rispetto a quella rimediata in Inghilterra, ma è pur sempre un 55-7 che non ammette repliche. Quattro mete per tempo e per il Gloucester, con tifosi al seguito, la pratica Rovigo è chiusa.
Si dirà che 55 punti incassati sono troppi, è vero, ma di più non si poteva fare. O forse una maggiore attenzione in occasione di due segnature ospiti che tuttavia non avrebbero cambiato le sorti di un match che la Femi Cz Rovigo, nell’ultimo impegno casalingo dell’Amlin Challenge Cup ha onorato mostrando qualche spezzone di gioco piacevole.
Purtroppo il Gloucester, non lo scopriamo oggi, si è dimostrato squadra tosta e determinata, in grado di ribaltare a proprio favore i momenti di pressione avversaria.
Un XV di un altro piano “votato” all’occupazione degli spazi, alla gestualità condita da un invidiabile possesso palla. Molto più rapido e pronto a stroncare sul nascere gli attacchi rossoblu- E quando quest’ultimi sembravano sul punto di fare breccia, entrava in gioco la grande reattività ospite che impediva la finalizzazione delle azioni. Una volta solo si è visto un cedimento, in occasione della meta di Anouer, ma lasciato smaltire il veemente attacco rossoblu, gli inglesi si sono rifatti con gli interessi punendo più del dovuto gli uomini di Polla Roux cui va dato merito di aver tentato di contenere gli straripanti avversari.
Che non si sono mai tirati indietro nonostante il match fosse ininfluente ai fini di una classifica impossibile da rimpinguare causa il risultato di Agen – La Rochelle (17-28) che lancia al vertice i francesi pronti a mettere sotto la Femi Cz Rovigo nell’ultima giornata di Amlin Cup.
Ma se va dato merito agli inglesi, altrettanto lo si deve dare ai Bersaglieri meno “rugosi” rispetto alle ultime uscite (coi Crociati non fa testo) e più determinati nell’approccio alla gara.
Nella mattinata prima della gara è stato ricordata la scomparsa di Mario Battaglini avvenuta il 1° gennaio 1971, un simbolo della palla ovale rodigina (leggi l’articolo).

Le prime due giornate del weekend europeo offre la prima, definitiva,sentenza della Heineken Cup. I Northampton Saints sono i primi qualificati ai quarti di finale, grazie soprattutto al successo di Cardiff contro il Castres, che taglia fuori i francesi. Ormai ai quarti, anche se non matematicamente, l’Ulster e i Leicester Tigers che nell’ultimo fine settimana sfideranno le cenerentole italiane. Che diventano, quindi, decisive.
L’Ulster supera di misura Biarritz e aggancia i francesi in vetta alla classifica, con i baschi che nell’ultimo turno ospiteranno il Bath. Qualificazione che, quindi, passa da Viadana, dove i nordirlandesi sperano di conquistare un successo con bonus che darebbe l’accesso certo ai playoff, con Ulster e Biarritz comunque in corsa per un posto come migliore seconda.
Vincono Perpignan e Leicester Tigers, i francesi con bonus conquistato a Treviso, e volano in vetta alla classifica, tagliando praticamente fuori gli Scarlets dalla corsa ai playoff. Tigri inglesi favorite grazie all’ultimo turno casalingo contro la Benetton, che così dovrà dare il massimo per diventare decisiva nella lotta playoff, mentre Perpignan dovrà superare gli Scarlets, sperare in un difficile passo falso di Castrogiovanni e compagni e puntare a qualificarsi come una delle migliore seconda.
Eliminato Castres, anche un’altra francese, il Racing Metrò, è ormai tagliata fuori dalla corsa playoff. Nel girone 2 il Leinster è praticamente ai playoff, ma dovrà portare a casa almeno un punto nella sfida parigina contro il XV di Pierre Berbizier, mentre i campioni transalpini del Clermont sono chiamati a vincere con bonus a Londra con i Saracens e sperare in una brutta sconfitta del Leinster. Difficilissimo, se non impossibile, così come è praticamente impossibile che i francesi trovino un posto tra le migliori seconde.
Manca ancora un match, ma la vittoria del Tolosa nel gruppo 6 lascia i francesi in una situazione molto positiva nella rincorsa a non abbandonare l’Europa che conta. Una sconfitta oggi dei Wasps darebbe la matematica qualificazione ai campioni in carica, ma anche una vittoria inglese lascerebbe elevate le chance di qualificazione, almeno come migliore seconda.
